Re-Cycle celebrates skills building programme for local students
Bikes to Zambia
Students from Colchester Institute kicked off the new college year by joining volunteers at Re-Cycle to help prepare donated bikes for shipment to Africa.
Over a four-week period, students with additional learning support needs, had the opportunity to develop their practical skills with the Essex-based charity which is dedicated to collecting unwanted bicycles and shipping them to rural communities in Africa.

Under the supervision of Re-Cycle’s warehouse manager, the students got to grips with a whole range of practical tasks including repositioning front wheels and handlebars ready to pack bikes efficiently into containers for shipment.
Toby Pratchett, a Colchester Institute student who took part in the programme, said:
“The staff at Re-Cycle made all of us feel very welcome. Re-Cycle allowed me to see the importance of a healthy work environment which helped me to improve my social skills in a work environment.
I was able to advance my manual labour skills, such as proficiency in the use of various tools, knowledge of safety procedures and my ability to ask for assistance.
My experience at Re-Cycle is one I will always be grateful for.”

For more than 15 years, the Essex-based charity, Re-Cycle, has been proud to work in partnership with Colchester Institute, building a relationship that first began when the charity was based at Severalls Business Park before its move to Wormingford.
In the last academic year alone, 13 students completed work experience placements at Re-Cycle, and another 5 supported a bike collection event held at Colchester Institute.
Charlotte Ward, Director of Re-Cycle said:
“It’s always a pleasure to welcome a new group of students to Re-Cycle where we can support them to build their practical and team working skills in a friendly environment.
It’s a joy to see their confidence build as they learn new skills, often coming out of their shells while making a real difference to our cause.”
In addition to the student skills building programme, Colchester Institute also organises bicycle collections from staff and students, donating them to Re-Cycle to support the charity’s ongoing mission.

Re-Cycle partners with seven organisations in Africa, which distribute the bikes to their local communities. These bicycles make a world of difference, providing affordable, sustainable transport that enables people to get to school, work, and healthcare facilities.

We rely on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners to continue its vital work. Whether it’s donating an unwanted bike, or making a financial contribution, every action helps transform lives through the gift of mobility.
