A New Beginning for Mitchell with a Donated Bike in Rooihout
Bikes to Zambia
Location: Rooihout, Cape Town
Bike Donated By: Re-Cycle UK | Distributed through BEN
At just four and a half years old, Mitchell Erasmus from Rooihout, Cape Town, embodies remarkable resilience. Raised by his grandmother since birth due to his mother’s struggles with substance use and his father’s absence, Mitchell faced challenges early on. After his mother left the hospital post-birth and never returned, his grandmother became his sole caregiver.
Growing up in Rooihout, Mitchell watched other children ride bicycles and play with toys he couldn’t afford. Feeling left out, he often faced teasing from peers, which dimmed his childhood spirit.

Bikes for South Africa: A Game-Changer
Everything changed when Nadeem and his wife from the Bonteheuwel Cycling Club stepped in. Through Re-Cycle UK’s bike donation program and the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), they gifted Mitchell a second-hand bicycle. Beyond the bike, they offered care and support when his grandmother needed help.
Now, Mitchell’s days are filled with joy. He’s:
- Gained confidence and happiness
- Rides his bike freely around Rooihout
- Feels included and vibrant in his community

“He’s a different boy now — full of excitement and joy every time he gets on his bike,”
says his grandmother.
Thanks to Re-Cycle UK’s community charity efforts and BEN’s distribution network, a simple bicycle has given Mitchell the chance to experience a joyful, carefree childhood.
