Knowledge is the Greatest Gift You Can Give

At Re-Cycle, we believe that sending bikes is just the beginning. To ensure those bikes keep rolling for years to come, we also invest in training local mechanics with our partners in Africa.
On a recent trip to Malawi, Charlotte and Mark worked with Africycle to deliver hands-on training to their team of bicycle mechanics.

Supporting Africycle’s Local Mechanics

Africycle employs a team of six full-time mechanics who already play a vital role in their communities. Each weekday, they refurbish donated bicycles, carry out small repairs, and generate income through bike sales. Their work keeps affordable bikes on the road and supports families across rural Malawi.

Sharing Knowledge and Skills

During the visit, Mark led practical training sessions designed to strengthen the mechanics’ expertise. The week included:
-
Hydraulic brake maintenance
-
Wheel truing and alignment
-
Advanced repair techniques
-
Practical tips to improve efficiency and safety in everyday repairs
This knowledge-sharing built on the mechanics’ existing skills, giving them confidence in areas where they hadn’t previously received formal training.

Building Capacity for the Future

The training was a big success: all six mechanics gained valuable new skills to take forward in their work. With this expertise, Africycle’s team can keep more bikes in good condition for longer, providing safer and more reliable transport for their communities.
For families, farmers, students, and healthcare workers, this means continued access to essential services like education, markets, and healthcare—all made possible by a bike that can stay on the road.

By combining bike shipments with mechanic training, Re-Cycle ensures that the impact of every donated bike goes further. It’s not just about delivering bicycles—it’s about creating a sustainable cycling culture where communities have both the tools and the knowledge to keep moving forward.
As one of Africycle’s mechanics shared during the training:
“Knowledge is the greatest gift you can give us.”
