Bicycling Empowerment Network
In the heart of Langa, Cape Town, the Langa Bicycle Hub is transforming lives and reshaping the community’s approach to transportation. Founded in 2020 by Mzikhona Mgedle, this inspiring initiative champions sustainable mobility, creates local job opportunities, and promotes cycling as an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to motorised transport.
The Vision Behind Langa Bicycle Hub
What began as an effort to advocate for non-motorised transport and support medicine deliveries during the pandemic has grown into a vibrant hub for mobility and community engagement. Today, the Hub boasts up to 15 volunteers and provides a safer public space for the community.
The Hub focuses on:
- Training locals in bicycle repair and maintenance.
- Promoting cycling as a viable transport alternative.
- Partnering with schools, local organisations, and businesses to educate on cycling safety, road awareness, and environmental sustainability.
Re-Cycle’s Partnership with Langa Bicycle Hub
Re-Cycle is proud to support the Langa Bicycle Hub by providing access to affordable bikes for its community initiatives. In November 2024, our Director Charlotte Ward and Warehouse Manager Mark visited Mzikhona and his team to strengthen our partnership and provide hands-on training to the Hub’s mechanics.
Bike Repair Training Workshop
Mark, a qualified bike mechanic, led an engaging and practical training session for the Hub’s volunteers. The workshop covered:
- Cable disc brakes.
- Hydraulic disc brakes.
- Rear derailleurs.
- Wheel truing.
The volunteers were enthusiastic and eager to learn, gaining valuable skills to keep their community’s bikes roadworthy. The session was so well-received that the group asked Mark to extend his stay for additional training. Although Charlotte and Mark had to return to the UK, they left with a sense of accomplishment and plans to continue supporting the Hub in the future.
The Impact of the Hub
The Langa Bicycle Hub exemplifies how bicycles can empower communities of all sizes. By fostering a cycling culture and creating opportunities, the Hub not only promotes affordable transportation but also drives sustainable development within Langa.
Re-Cycle is honored to partner with Mzikhona and his dedicated team. Together, we’re not only distributing bikes but also equipping communities with the tools and knowledge to sustain their impact.
We look forward to returning to Langa and continuing our work with the incredible volunteers at the Langa Bicycle Hub.
