Supporting Education and Community Projects

The team toured local projects supported by WYCE, including the medical centre, primary school, and bicycle workshop. These initiatives highlight WYCE’s commitment to the community; creating jobs, supporting essential services, and fostering sustainable development.

A key visit was to Bakalarr Upper Basic School, the recipient of WYCE’s largest Cycle-to-School project, with 70 bicycles delivered in October 2025.

Many students had previously walked 8–12 km along dark bush paths to reach school. Teachers reported improved attendance and energy levels, and seeing students now use bicycles for their daily journeys demonstrated the significant difference the programme is making.

Cycling Programmes and Skills Development

The team also supported the inter-school cycling championship, where 12 schools competed on Re-Cycle bikes. The event showcased the students’ determination and encouraged ongoing engagement with cycling.

Time was spent training local bicycle mechanics in repair and maintenance, ensuring skills are passed on to sustain cycling infrastructure. Office staff also received guidance to strengthen communications and administrative skills, helping WYCE expand and manage its programmes effectively.

Empowerment in Action

WYCE’s model was clear in practice: mechanics trained by the organisation are now running independent workshops, employing others and expanding their services.

This ensures the benefits of Re-Cycle bicycles extend far beyond the initial distribution, generating long-term community impact.
