We are a small charity based in Wormingford near Colchester. Our mission is to transform lives through bicycle re-use. Some of the bicycles that are donated to us are selected to be refurbished in our workshop and then sold to the general public to help fund the charity and the work we do. This new and exciting apprentice role will play an integral part in refurbishing the bicycles for sale, working closely with our Workshop Manager and dedicated team of volunteers.

Role Responsibilities:

  • To learn the process and assist in the preparation of refurbishing second-hand bicycles
  • To assist in identifying issues with donated bikes and refurbish appropriately under instruction
  • To assist the workshop manager in daily tasks
  • To assist the volunteers in the workshop
  • To complete all necessary paperwork required to refurbish a second-hand bicycle
  • To carry our regular stock takes for the Workshop Manager
  • To ensure the spare parts storage area is tidy and organised
  • To ensure tool boards are kept tidy along with the whole warehouse working area
  • To support the Warehouse Manager with unloading deliveries of bicycles
  • To support the Warehouse Manager with loading container of bicycles for African Partners
  • To support the Warehouse team with prepping bicycles for Africa
  • To assist with bicycle sales
  • To support the Dr Bike service we provide to the University of Essex during term time
  • To comply with all Health and Safety Procedures

This is a customer facing role so you will need to have good customer service skills. You will be able to listen to customer needs and assess the best options for them and advise on bike suitability. You will also be working closely with volunteers on a daily basis and will need to provide support to them as and when required.

The Training you will receive:

  • The apprenticeship standard is set at Intermediate Level 2
  • The apprentice will be working towards Cytech Level 3 qualification
  • Qualifications includes: Cytech Technical Level 2 and Level 3
  • The apprentice will gain industry recognised qualifications whilst completing their apprenticeship. They will need to attend the following Cytech courses during two periods of block release training: 1. Cytech Technical Two (during months 5 to 7) based off site. 2. Cytech Technical Three (during months 14 to 16) based off site
  • Apprentices must achieve at least FS Level 1 in English and maths to complete this apprenticeship and work towards a Level 2 qualification (unless exempt with recognised prior learning and/or GCSE passes [grade 4/C or above]).
  • This will be an 18 month apprenticeship

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship:

We are a small, friendly team who are committed to changing lives through bicycle re-use.  From day one you will become part of this team and play a key role in the Workshop team.

Initial fixed-term contract to cover the period of the apprenticeship. On satisfactory completion of the programme a full-time permanent contract will be issued.

The successful applicant will be part of a team and as such it is envisaged will become a qualified, bicycle mechanic.

Further training and qualifications would be available after the completion of apprenticeship.

The valuable skills learnt would be easily transferred to other industries and applications.

Salary:

£8.00 – £11.50 per hour

Annual Leave:

25 days of annual leave, with an additional 3 days to be used during our Christmas closure, in addition to public holidays.

Working hours:

Full time (36.25 hours per week).

Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. Lunch break at 1.00pm for 45 minutes (unpaid)
