Our Partner in MALAWI
Our Partners:
Africycle
Re-Cycle has partnered with AfriCycle to bring life-changing opportunities to rural communities in Malawi through access to affordable bicycles. By sending bikes from the UK, Re-Cycle supports AfriCycle’s key initiatives, including a microloan programme that enables low-income families to purchase bicycles and repay over several months, benefiting from reduced transport costs. Re-Cycle also contributes to AfriCycle’s bike maintenance and repair training, equipping locals with essential skills for keeping their bikes in good condition.
AfriCycle reinvests proceeds from refurbished bike sales into community development projects, including support for over 500 orphaned children. In a country facing severe economic challenges due to Cyclone Freddy and currency devaluation, bicycles provide a critical link to schools, healthcare, markets, and job opportunities.
With improved mobility, households can save money, children can attend school more regularly, and healthcare workers can reach more remote areas. Re-Cycle’s partnership will empower Malawians with better access to essential services and economic opportunities.

Programmes Supported by Re-Cycle
Microloan Programme for Bicycle Ownership
Re-Cycle bicycles will contribute to Africycle’s microloan initiative, which allows poorer households to purchase bikes and repay the loan over 4-5 months. These families benefit from reduced transport costs, with savings reinvested in education, farming, or improving living standards. By making bikes affordable and accessible through microloans, the programme transforms daily life for low-income families, giving them a tool for mobility and economic growth.
Bicycle Maintenance and Repair Training
Re-Cycle will also support AfriCycle’s mechanic training programmes, which provide individuals in Malawi with the skills needed to maintain and repair bicycles. This training not only ensures that bikes are kept in good condition but also creates jobs and generates income for local mechanics. The goal is to create a self-sustaining model, where the knowledge and skills stay within the community, fostering long-term economic independence.
Community Development Initiatives
Proceeds from the sale of refurbished bikes fund AfriCycle’s various community projects, including programmes for orphaned and vulnerable children. Currently, over 500 orphaned children are supported by AfriCycle’s community reinvestment efforts. These initiatives provide critical resources and help improve overall community resilience, offering social support where it is most needed.
