Re-Cycle’s 150,000th Bike in Sierra Leone

The Story of Sorie Kamara: How a Bike Changed a Life

Village Bicycle Project   |    Case Study – December 2024

In a remote village of Heremanakoh, Sierra Leone, a young student named Sorie Kamara faced daily challenges in pursuing his education. Each morning, Sorie would set out on a grueling six-to-seven-mile journey to school, navigating uneven paths and enduring harsh weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, his determination to learn never wavered.

Sorie’s teachers admired his dedication, but the exhausting trek often left him too drained to fully engage in his studies. His academic potential was clear, yet the physical toll of his journey presented a significant barrier.

That all changed when Sorie received a bicycle from Village Bicycle Project, Re-Cycle’s partner. The bicycle, part of a program to support hardworking students, immediately transformed his daily life. What was once an hours-long walk became a manageable ride, freeing up time and energy for his studies.

This bicycle, donated in the UK and sent as Re-Cycle’s 150,000th bike, is more than just a milestone—it’s a life-changing gift, demonstrating how small contributions can create a meaningful impact in communities across the world.
