Bicycling Empowerment Network | Case Study – November 2024
Re-Cycle works with the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) in South Africa, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities through bicycles, offering hope and support to those in need. Earlier this month, Re-Cycle’s Director Charlotte and Warehouse Manager Mark traveled to Cape Town to visit BEN.
During their visit, they joined the BEN team to meet community partners—local entrepreneurs who play a vital role in the distribution of bikes within their communities. Trained in bike mechanics and small business management, these entrepreneurs receive bikes from BEN, ensure their roadworthiness, and provide affordable transportation to those who need it most.
Charlotte and Mark had the chance to meet Ismail, father of Nariya, in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town. Seeing the house where Nariya grew up offered valuable insight into her incredible journey and the significant impact that selling Re-Cycle bikes has had on her and her family’s lives.
Ismail, now living on his own in a brightly coloured home in the bustling suburb of Mitchell’s Plain, embodies ingenuity and resourcefulness. His house is like an Aladdin’s Cave of bicycle parts, a testament to his lifelong passion for bicycles.
At just 13 years old, Ismail began working at a local bicycle shop, starting with sweeping and gradually learning the trade from the shop owner. Though he ventured into various industries after leaving school, his love for working on bikes never faded. Today, Ismail purchases bikes from Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN)—Re-Cycle’s partner in South Africa—and sells them on the side of the road outside his home on weekends to passing traffic. On a good weekend, he can sell up to two bikes, supplementing his income and helping to provide affordable transportation in his community.
Despite the size of his home, Ismail has maximised his space with incredible organisation. Every corner holds bike parts and items he has sourced, all reused or repurposed in some way. His home also features an aviary where he lovingly cares for 65 birds, adding a lively touch to his unique environment.
Ismail’s resourcefulness and contentment shine through in every aspect of his life. He is a pillar of his community and an example of how bicycles can empower not only individuals but also their families.
