INTRODUCTION
At Re-Cycle, our mission goes beyond donating bikes. We’ve built strong partnerships with NGOs in Africa, ensuring our bikes are distributed efficiently and effectively. These collaborations provide us with valuable feedback, helping us continually adapt and improve our processes.
Through Cycle to School projects, we partner with dedicated organisations in Africa
to provide bicycles to students who face long and arduous journeys to school. These bicycles are more than a mode of transport—they are a lifeline to education and a brighter future.
CYCLE TO SCHOOL
Cycle to School is a project initiated by Re-Cycle’s partners in Africa, running in The Gambia, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. The aim is to support students traveling long distances to rural schools. This project enhances student performance by improving attendance and punctuality.
How it works:
• Our partners collaborate with local schools to identify students with the longest commutes and provide them with bicycles.
• Each child attends a workshop on road safety and minor bicycle repairs, and parents sign a contract agreeing to maintain the bicycle for their child’s use.
• A project coordinator at each school collects data on exam results and attendance to monitor progress and identify areas needing extra support.
• Local bicycle mechanics are trained and equipped to offer low-cost repair services specifically for these schools.
PROJECT AIMS
Providing reliable transportation ensures students can attend school regularly, leading to better academic outcomes and personal growth.
By eliminating the barrier of long commutes, bicycles help students stay in school and continue their education without physical and logistical challenges.
A bicycles alleviates the financial burden of regular transportation costs for families, making education more accessible and affordable.
Reliable transportation allows students to arrive on time, contributing to a more orderly and effective learning environment.
Enabling students to attend school locally reduces the need for families to move to urban areas, helping to maintain the social and economic stability of rural communities.
APPEAL FOR FUNDING
We are seeking your support to fund the Cycle to School projects in The Gambia, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. Your contribution will have a direct impact on the effectiveness of these programs and the students’ lives.
With your support, we can provide more children with bicycles and training, increasing school attendance, improving student performance, and giving them a brighter future.
CASE STUDY : The Gambia
Wonder Years Centre of Excellence (WYCE) in Madina Salam, The Gambia, has partnered with Re-Cycle since 2013. Re-Cycle and WYCE have distributed over 17,000 bicycles, supporting numerous schools and individuals across the Gambia.
Cycle to School is transforming lives in The Gambia by addressing traditional beliefs that hinder girls’ education. WYCE supports this initiative by donating over 700 bicycles to the project and establishing a bike repair training center, which has trained fourteen local mechanics.
Each year, Cycle to School selects 25 students for each of its six projects, with at least 15 of these spots specifically reserved for girls. This empowering move not only supports young girls but also showcases the potential of education in the local community. Each child receives a bike helmet, a reflector jacket, and basic road safety training to ensure their safety on the roads.
Students participating in the program attend workshops focused on road safety and basic bicycle maintenance. Additionally, parents sign a contract agreeing that the bicycle will be maintained and used by their child. This ensures that the bicycles remain in good condition and continue to serve their intended purpose of aiding the students’ educational journeys.
By providing bicycles and essential training, Cycle to School is helping to bridge the gender gap in education. This program enables more children, especially girls, to attend school regularly and safely. The initiative not only improves individual lives but also fosters a culture of learning and equality in the community. Join us in making a lasting difference.
