Wheels That Change Lives: Supporting Healthcare in Rural Zambia
Bikes to Africa
Care Provider Foundation, Zambia | Case Study – May 2025
At Re-Cycle, we usually focus on one thing…bikes. But when a long-standing partner reaches out with need, and we know we can help, we can make exceptions.
This was the case when Willard, Director of the Care Provider Foundation (CPF) in Zambia, shared a personal story with us. Willard had taken his elderly mother-in-law to Kapiri-Mposhi District Hospital, only to discover there were no wheelchairs available. He had to carry her all the way to the admission ward himself.
Sadly, this wasn’t an isolated case. Both Kapiri-Mposhi District Hospital and nearby Kapiri Urban Hospital face ongoing challenges; a lack of medicines, basic equipment, and mobility aids that are vital for patient care.
After hearing Willard’s story, we explored how Re-Cycle could provide support and reached out to contacts who might be able to help.
DGT Services Ltd in Chelmsford kindly donated six wheelchairs to us for Zambia. These wheelchairs were squeezed into our latest container shipment to Zambia, alongside our regular delivery of bikes!
As soon as the shipment arrived, CPF acted quickly.
– 3 wheelchairs were delivered to Kapiri District Hospital
– 2 to Kapiri Urban Hospital
– 1 was kept in reserve for emergencies

The donation was met with heartfelt appreciation. In the words of the Medical Superintendent of Kapiri-Mposhi District Hospital:
“No amount of words will describe how happy we are to receive this donation. Thank you to Care Provider Foundation and Re-Cycle for this generous donation.”
These wheelchairs (made possible by a local business, and delivered through our trusted partnership) have already made a real impact on patients and families in Kapiri-Mposhi.
While wheelchairs aren’t part of our regular shipments, we’re proud to have stepped in when we can help.
