Bicycles as a Pathway to Education and Independence

In many rural communities across Ghana, long walking distances prevent girls from accessing education and opportunities. Village Bicycle Project’s Learn-to-Ride (L2R) program is breaking down these barriers by equipping girls with cycling skills and providing them with bicycles—offering a sustainable, independent mode of transport.

By early 2025, 48 schoolgirls from two schools have successfully completed L2R training, gaining the confidence and ability to ride safely to school. With improved mobility, these girls are arriving on time, saving energy, and staying in education longer.

Why Cycling Matters for Girls

In many parts of Ghana, schools are miles away from students’ homes. For girls, this often means waking up before dawn to start a long and exhausting walk, making them late, tired, or even unable to attend school at all. The Learn-to-Ride program is a game-changer, giving these girls a fast, reliable, and safe way to reach school every day.

“Before the program, many girls struggled to reach school on time. Now, they arrive early, focused, and ready to learn,” says Master Abraham Asiedu Agbovi, head teacher at Mueter DA Basic School.

Beyond just transport, the program challenges gender norms. In many communities, riding a bike is traditionally seen as a male activity, limiting girls’ independence and mobility. By teaching girls to ride, Village Bicycle Project is helping to break down these barriers and shift perceptions.

Expanding the Program: More Girls, More Opportunities

Following the success of the initial Learn-to-Ride program, Village Bicycle Project has set an ambitious goal: train 100 girls in bicycle riding by the end of 2025. Future plans include:

Bicycle maintenance workshops – teaching girls how to repair and care for their bikes, ensuring long-term use.

Cycling clubs within schools – creating a supportive community of young female riders.

Establishing bicycle repair hubs – providing resources for ongoing maintenance and skill-building.

“Riding a bike has given me freedom,” shares Mariam, an L2R graduate. “I don’t have to rely on anyone—I can get to school on my own.”
