A Bike from the UK, a Future in Ghana: Vida’s Story

Village Bicycle Project   |    Case Study – January 2025

At Re-Cycle (Bikes to Africa), every bike donated in the UK is a chance to make a difference.
Bikes to Ghana
Take 16-year-old Vida Mensah from Amanhyia MA Basic School in Ghana. One of our bikes—dropped off by a donor here, shipped to Ghana, and handed over by our partners at Village Bicycle Project—has changed her life. Before she got it, Vida had it rough. Living in a remote village, she’d wake up before dawn and walk 5 miles to school. That three-hour haul over dirt paths left her late, exhausted, and struggling to keep up in class. It was holding her back, and we knew a bike could turn that around.

Bikes to Ghana

We collect bikes people don’t need anymore and ship them to places like Ghana, where they can do real good. Once they’re there, we train local mechanics to keep them running strong. Through Village Bicycle Project, Vida got hers, and the difference hit hard. Now she pedals in on time, full of energy, and ready to learn. That grueling walk is history, and her shorter commute means she’s not wiped out before school even starts.

Vida says:
“The three-hour daily walk to school was draining my dreams of becoming a nurse. Since receiving my bicycle from Village Bicycle Project and partners, I arrive energized and on time. My grades are improving significantly, and my confidence has soared. I hope more students can receive bikes to transform their education journey like mine.”
She’s set on becoming a nurse, and with her grades picking up, she’s on her way.

Bikes to Ghana

This is what drives us at Re-Cycle. One bike from the UK doesn’t just help Vida—it’s part of a bigger shift in rural Ghana. Kids are skipping fewer classes, showing up in better shape, and getting a real shot at education. Attendance is climbing, and that sets more students up to stick it out and build something for themselves. Plus, these bikes run on pedal power, so it’s good for the planet too. Every morning Vida rides those 5 miles, she’s proof of what a donated bike can do—breaking down walls and rolling her closer to her dreams. We train mechanics in Africa to keep those wheels turning, and with every bike donated here in the UK, we’re hoping to get more kids like Vida where they need to be.
