Steve’s Journey Volunteering with Re-Cycle

Celebrating 15 Years of Dedication:

Steve’s Journey Volunteering with Re-Cycle

At Re-Cycle, we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated volunteers who bring their passion, skills, and energy to support our mission. Today, we celebrate a special milestone—Steve, our longest-standing volunteer, who has been with us for an incredible 15 years.

Steve joined Re-Cycle in 2009, shortly after retiring, drawn by his belief in the positive impact of our work. Since then, he has been a key part of our team, volunteering two days a week in our workshop.

Refurbishing Bikes, Fueling Our Mission

Steve’s role focuses on refurbishing bikes that are not suitable for shipping to Africa. These bikes are sold to the public, providing essential funds that help keep our charity running. Steve jokes that he works “Gentleman’s Hours,” volunteering two days a week, but always making time for regular tea breaks.

“Our workshop is very well resourced, and we maintain a high standard of refurbishment,” Steve says.

“The low level of returns is the ultimate measure of success.”

Beyond the bike refurbishments, Steve has also been known to roll up his sleeves when the warehouse needs a fresh coat of paint or a little extra TLC.

A Journey of Evolution and Community

Reflecting on his time with Re-Cycle, Steve has seen the organisation evolve significantly over the years. He recalls the early days, describing the operation as “relatively primitive” compared to the “well-oiled machine” it is today. Despite the changes, one thing that has remained constant is the positive and welcoming atmosphere at Re-Cycle.

“Although many volunteers and staff have come and gone over the years, the essential characteristic of the charity has always been one of high standards in all aspects of its work, carried out in a relaxed and happy atmosphere,” Steve shares.

While the workshop runs smoothly, Steve admits there’s one area of friendly debate among the team: the music. The choice of tunes occasionally leads to what Steve describes as “serious discombobulation in the ranks“.

Thank You, Steve!

Steve’s dedication, skill, and sense of humour have left an indelible mark on Re-Cycle. His commitment over the last 15 years has not only helped raise vital funds for our charity but has also contributed to the vibrant, welcoming community that Re-Cycle is today.

Thank you, Steve, for everything you’ve done and continue to do.
