Chris Boardman MBE Supports Re-Cycle’s Charity Sportive
116 keen cyclists took to the countryside surrounding Wormingford, Colchester on Saturday, 18 May, as part of a charity sportive event. Organised by local cycling club VCR Colchester, the event now in its 3rd year – attracted the highest number of riders to date, all pedalling with purpose to support the charity Re-Cycle.
The presence of cycling legend Chris Boardman MBE added an extra layer of significance to the occasion. As a passionate advocate for cycling and a proud patron of Re-Cycle, his involvement highlighted the importance of initiatives aimed at making cycling accessible and sustainable.
During his visit, Chris Boardman took great interest in the work of Re-Cycle. He embarked on a tour of the warehouse and actively engaged with volunteers, learning the process of preparing bikes for Africa and loading them onto the container bound for The Gambia.
Reflecting on his experience, Chris expressed, “It is a wonderful charity to be involved in.”
He further remarked, “It is such an impressive set up to see that everything is being reused and when you get to the very last bit where ‘we can’t use this’, even that’s being recycled.”
Thanks to the incredible efforts of VCR Colchester and the support from the community, the event raised over £2750. This substantial sum will directly contribute to Re-Cycle’s ongoing endeavours, ensuring that more communities in Africa have access to life-changing transportation solutions.
As the container prepares to depart on Wednesday for The Gambia, the impact of this charity sportive reverberates far beyond Colchester. This container, filled with bicycles, represents a lifeline for many communities, providing them with access to essential transportation.
The funds raised and the dedication of the local community are testaments to the power of collective action in creating positive change.
