Re-Cycle is proud to partner with the Gabriel Rotimi Aroge Empowerment Foundation (GRAEF) in Nigeria to tackle transportation barriers to education. This pilot phase marks the first year of our collaboration, focused on improving access to school through affordable and sustainable cycling solutions.

Many students face long and unsafe journeys to school, which contributes to absenteeism and dropout rates. Through this partnership, Re-Cycle provides bicycles, spare parts, and mechanic training, while GRAEF leads local coordination, road safety education, and project monitoring.

The Work We Support

Cycle-to-School Programme

The Cycle-to-School programme provides students with bicycles, spare parts, and mechanic training to improve access to education. This pilot phase focuses on reducing travel time, increasing school attendance, and promoting safe cycling, laying the foundation for future expansion.

Road Safety Education

Students receive bicycle maintenance and road safety training to build confidence and independence. GRAEF also delivers ‘Learn to Ride’ sessions, ensuring young people can cycle safely and develop lifelong skills.

Local Bike Sales

Some bicycles are sold locally to help fund school-based initiatives and expand access to affordable bicycles within communities. This approach supports both project sustainability and wider access to transport.

Project Objectives

Improving Access to Education

Bicycles reduce travel times and help students attend school more regularly, improving academic performance and reducing dropout rates. Girls and disadvantaged students are prioritised to help address safety and access barriers.

Enhancing Road Safety Awareness

Schools deliver cycling safety education, including the use of helmets, puncture repair kits, and high-visibility equipment. ‘Learn to Ride’ sessions build confidence and ensure safer cycling for all participants.

Sustainable Transport Solutions

Re-Cycle supports the training of local mechanics to maintain bicycles and ensure long-term usability. The project also works with local stakeholders to encourage cycling-friendly policies and infrastructure, supporting a lasting shift towards sustainable transport.

Strengthening Community-Led Education

By working with schools, families, and local leaders, the project builds shared responsibility for keeping children in education and improving long-term participation in cycling and learning.
