Bicycling Empowerment Network
Re-Cycle proudly partners with the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) South Africa to provide sustainable transport solutions that transform lives.
BEN distributes bicycles through a network of community partners and small businesses, creating employment opportunities while ensuring affordable access to transport. These centres are run by local entrepreneurs trained in business management and bicycle mechanics, who not only distribute bikes but also keep them in safe, roadworthy condition.
Together, we are helping make sustainable mobility a reality for communities across South Africa.

The Work We Support
Mechanic Training
Re-Cycle supports the training of local bicycle mechanics, equipping them with the skills needed to repair and maintain bicycles for years to come. From basic repairs to advanced maintenance, this training helps create local jobs while ensuring donated bikes remain in use.
Local Bike Shops
Through BEN’s network, local entrepreneurs receive bicycles, tools, and training to operate local bike shops. These small businesses provide affordable transport options, create sustainable employment, and help keep cycling accessible within their communities.
Advocacy for Cycling
BEN works to promote cycling as a practical and sustainable form of transport. By advocating for safer cycling infrastructure and greater recognition of non-motorised transport, BEN helps create healthier, greener, and more connected communities.
Project Objectives
Increasing Access to Affordable Transport
Through BEN’s network of community-based bike shops, more people can access reliable and affordable transport for work, education, healthcare, and everyday life.
Building Skills
Training local mechanics equips communities with the knowledge and expertise needed to repair and maintain bicycles, ensuring donated bikes remain in use for years to come.
Creating Employment Opportunities
Supporting local entrepreneurs to run community bike shops creates sustainable livelihoods, strengthens local economies, and expands access to affordable transport.
Encouraging Sustainable Mobility
By promoting cycling as an alternative to motorised transport, the project helps reduce environmental impact while providing a low-cost and sustainable way to travel.
Be part of the journey
A bicycle is more than just transport. It creates opportunities, supports livelihoods, and helps communities thrive.
By supporting Re-Cycle and BEN South Africa, you can help provide bicycles, training, and sustainable transport solutions to the people who need them most.
