INTRODUCTION
At Re-Cycle, we pride ourselves on going beyond the simple act of bike donations. We have established strong partnerships with organisations in Africa, ensuring that our bikes are distributed efficiently and effectively. These partnerships allow us to stay connected, receiving valuable data that helps us adapt and improve our processes continually.
One significant aspect of our commitment is providing support in bicycle mechanics training to the local communities. Training the mechanics means we are working sustainably to maintain the bicycles and reduce waste.
Regularly, our team visits our partners in Africa, and during these visits, one of our experienced mechanics spends a week training local bicycle mechanics and ensuring their workshops are running smoothly. This direct engagement is critical to the success of our programs and ensures that the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable bicycle maintenance are passed on effectively.
Empowering locals with skills in bicycle mechanics is not just about maintaining bikes—it’s about fostering self-reliance and enabling economic growth within the communities we serve. As individuals gain proficiency in bicycle maintenance, they not only contribute to the sustainability of our programs but also open doors to new opportunities, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
TOOLKITS FOR BICYCLE MECHANICS
Maintaining bicycles in good working order is vital for their longevity and the impact they have on local communities. Our dedicated bicycle mechanics in Africa play a crucial role in this regard. However, acquiring good quality tools can be a significant challenge for them locally. To address this, in the past, we have sent toolkits to our partners to empower them with the necessary equipment for sustainable bike maintenance.
Unfortunately, the reality is that many of the tools sent out in the past have become used and worn down over time. This is where we need your support. The Re-cycle team has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by our partners in Africa due to the deteriorating condition of their tools. To continue our mission successfully, we must look at replacing these tools and ensuring that our bicycle mechanics have access to high-quality equipment.
A bike mechanic requires a wide range of special tools to enable them to service a bike quickly and safely. A reliable set of tools for newly qualified mechanics costs Re-Cycle £142 and will last many years. As many as 12 mechanics will be trained every year by our partners in The Gambia, Ghana, South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Zambia.
