African Partners
Re~Cycle relies on its partners in Africa
to deliver the projects on the ground, refurbishing, distributing
and maintaining the bikes. Partners vary in approach, including;
offering credit, government subsidies, running workshops
to teach cycle repair and maintenance skills and courses
in safe riding.
Re~Cycle is working to help them develop capacity,
moving towards "The Ideal Partner"
Ghana
(The Village Bicycle Project)
Major focus on mechanic training and getting
bicycle tools into the country. Was selling them below cost
price to stimulate the market, now selling at wholesale.
Mechanics helping deliver the training get discounted tools.
Set up by ex peace corps man David Peckham.
Ghana
(The Asante Akim Multipurpose Community Telecentre)
South
Africa (Afribike)
Based in Johannesburg/Pretoria, with several
workshops in the area. Afribike delivered Phase 1 of the
National Department of Transports's nationwide bicycle program,
"Shova Kalulua" (Pedal Easy) setting up 11 workshops,
with a focus on Kwa Zulu Natal and the Northwest Province.
South
Africa (The Bicycle Empowerment Network)
BEN is based in the Cape area, working with
local Rotary and cyclists, and is involved with the Cape
Argus, the biggest bike race in the world!
Namibia
(The Bicycle Empowerment Network)
Major focus on providing bikes to AIDS/HIV
outreach workers. Set up by Michael Linke, who used to ride
pedicabs in London
Uganda
(Bicycle Sponsorship Project and Workshop BSPW)
Have received 2 x 40-foot boxes from Re~Cycle,
including light metal working tools to make their famous
Bicycle Ambulance.
Liberia
A bike workshop is being set up as a micro-enterprise
for graduates of a Don Bosco College.
